KARATE LEGEND: WADO RYU FOUNDER HIRONORI OTSUKA
Wado Ryu is a skilful martial art that combines the Jujutsu of the ancient Japanese martial art of Shinto Yoshin Ryu with the excellent attacking methods of Ryukyu Karate.
It was created in 1934 by the first generation head, Hironori Otsuka, and, along with Shotokan Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu,can be counted as one of the four great traditional styles of Karate Do. Coming into1926, Hironori Otsuka studied under Kenwa Mabuni and Choki Motobu, implementing this into Karate research.
Furthermore, he studied Yagyu Shinkage Ryu from Gihachiro Kubo and researched Toda Ryu Kodachi on his own.Throwing out all of the disadvantages of Japanese Budo, and taking only the advantages. He took these into account and blended with the Karate and Jujutsu that he himself was doing, and created the techniques and theory of Wado Ryu Karate Jutsu and Wado Ryu Jujutsu Kenpo.
What is Martial arts ?
Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of reasons such as self-defense; military and law enforcement applications; competition; physical, mental, and spiritual development; entertainment; and the preservation of a nation’s intangible cultural heritage.
Although the term martial art has become associated with the fighting arts of East Asia, it originally referred to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. The term is derived from Latin and means “arts of Mars”, the Roman god of war. Some authors have argued that fighting arts or fighting systems would be more appropriate on the basis that many martial arts were never “martial” in the sense of being used or created by professional warriors.
